This regulation revises the regulations under I.R.C. 6103(j)(1), which authorizes the Secretary of the Treasury to furnish certain return information to the Census Bureau for the purpose of, but only to the extent necessary in, the structuring of censuses and conducting related statistical activities authorized by law.  This regulation removes the itemized description of the items of return information that the Census Bureau is authorized to receive from the IRS, while keeping safeguards in place to ensure that the Census Bureau will only receive from the IRS such return information as is necessary for designated purposes.
